Are you an expert in something?
Or maybe not an expert, but maybe you are really good at something.
Now, I am not trying to brag, but here are a few things I specialize in…
- Overanalyzing every situation to death
- Telling myself stories — that have proven to be untrue 96.7% of the time
- Eating more pizza than my body can handle — happens every time, like clockwork
- Getting in my own way — again and again and again and…
And before I get a rush of emails, I do not teach any of these 🙂
Lets talk about that last one, as I think a lot of people are guilty of this.
Step Aside, I Got This…Or Do I?
I have a Shopify course (
shameless plug here) where I teach people how to build a 6 figure eCommerce store in 90 days without sacrificing their money, sanity or their reputation.
It’s a super quick read.
If you’re interested, have a look.
If not, that’s cool, too.
How Internet Marketing Works — a Quick Lesson
I am going to try and make this super quick, if you’re familiar with Internet Marketing, you can skip down to the next section (here’s the kicker part)
As you might have noticed, there are multiple places on this very site where people can download the above blueprint. If someone downloads it, it is automatically sent to their email inbox. They are then added to my email database where they receive
hilarious, helpful emails from me about setting up a Shopify store, over the next couple of weeks.
Around the 5th day, I introduce my Shopify course, Smashify, that they can invest in.
This is all automated, with the help of software. I am not manually sending these emails, although some people do think that is how is how ti works. In 2010, when I got started, that is what I thought as well.
Nope, it is all automated.
The internet is a beautiful place, huh?
This is what internet marketers call a funnel (see image below).
I have had this funnel in place since November, so about 7 months. I have not spent a single penny on Facebook ads with this funnel.
On the otherhand, I have spent $98,704.08 since November advertising my Shopify store on Facebook.
I say that to prove I know a thing or two about Facebook ads, and not to brag.
Here’s the kicker…
3 people invested in my course in March, 5 more in April, and another 3 last month. Not retirement money, but proves that my funnel is working WITHOUT ads.
I am afraid of failure…
That’s what it comes down to.
It is not easy to admit, but it is the truth.
It has paralyzed me, that I have done nothing with this funnel, after spending a ton of time, money & energy putting it together.
I was afraid I would lose money with Facebook. I told myself (#2 above) my funnel was not ready to run ads, as it needed to be improved, even though I didn’t know if anything was wrong with it. And since I made 11 sales in the last 3 months, something was obviously working!
When using Facebook advertising, you can find out rather quickly if things are working or not. At first, things usually do not work, and that is when you make improvements. Just like anything else, you get better (and more profitable) with time.
When you have a funnel that is working/profitable, it becomes a math problem.
For every $1 I invest, my funnel will generate me $xx in return.
It is kind of like printing money.
Ah Ha Moment on a Webinar
I signed up for a webinar last week, one that I was really looking forward to — which is strange, as I have been on so many over the years.
The excitement wore off long ago.
Now, this marketer is someone I have followed for a couple years and someone I respect in our industry. I cannot reveal this person’s name, but I know this person has made millions online, been featured on Huffington Post, Business Insider, Yahoo and many others.
Unfortunately, I had therapy at noon and that is when the webinar started. As soon as I got in my car, around 12:45, I opened up my email to get the link for the webinar, so I could listen to it on the drive home.
Like I said, I have been on hundreds of webinars over the years. And have probably listened to 2 or 3 in the car.
I listened on the 20 minute drive home, and nothing earth shattering. As in, this marketer was teaching the basics of Facebook advertising.
I got home and fired up the laptop to watch the rest of it, as it was going to be a 2 hour webinar.
After the webinar, I was messaged a friend to get her feedback on the webinar. She felt the same way that I did…
This was all information we both knew, but have NOT done anything with!
We both learned a couple tips that we’ll test out, but nothing I have not been doing with Shopify store over the last 12 months.
This webinar was about selling digital products. My Smashify course is digital, and a big reason why I wanted to attend, as I assumed running ads for eCommerce and digital, were two very different animals.
Never assume, this is something else I seem to be good at.
I went into the webinar expecting to discover some insider secrets about Facebook advertising.
I came out with so much more.
I didn’t learn any earth shattering Facebook strategies or secrets.
I did learn that I know enough, but the fear of failure has paralyzed me, into not taking action.
Damn you, Atychiphobia (the fear of failure, you can read it here)
I also learned this person keeps it stupidly simple.
This marketer has taken imperfect action, and has done very well, including building a thriving community of 20,000+ entrepreneurs.
Don’t be like me and overanalyze everything.
Don’t be like me and tell yourself bullshit stories and talk yourself out of opportunities.
Don’t be like me and eat too much pizza.
And never, ever forget this…
