Do you have any?
I never have.
I take that back…
I had some, but they were not the good ones.
Although, last year I had a goal of making it to the gym for 30 consecutive days.
To be honest, I had zero faith in achieving this goal.
I hit 30 days. I then had a new goal of 50 consecutive days.
I completed my 51st consecutive day in late August.
I have not been back to the gym since then. Amazing. And sad, too.
I broke the chain. If you’re not familiar with the term “chain”, check out this site, inspired by Jerry Seinfield; Don’t Break the Chain!
Progress Not Perfection
Last November, Robert, a buddy of mine, posted a picture of a book that he highly recommended on Facebook. It was a book another friend, Conrad, had recommended to me before.
The book was called The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness.
If you have not read it, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s an easy read and it can change your life, if you implement what he teaches.
It’s about doing little things each and every day for big results. Not big results this week or next, but over time, you will see change. It’s about creating daily habits. The author says these habits are easy to do, but they’re also easy NOT to do.
You need self-discipline.
It’s about progress, not perfection.
Six Months to Six Figures
Conrad had recommended another book to me earlier last year (see a pattern?). He always talked about it, but I never read it. He told me about The Slight Edge and I didn’t listen, but it was an excellent read. Maybe I should check out this other book he always talks about.
We planned to meet for lunch in December, so he could give me a copy. He had an extra one just for me. With the holidays, we were never able to connect for lunch. Although, I take the blame for not finding the time.
He then recommended ANOTHER book called 6 Months to 6 Figures. I figured I would check out this book until we could meet for lunch. I assumed we’d meet for lunch in January (we did) and I could read it then.
In the mean time, I bought 6 Months to 6 Figures and read it in less than 2 weeks. It was fantastic! I honestly couldn’t put it down.
Listening to My Friend
I realized something — Conrad knows his books. He has recommended three books to me and the two I read, were excellent. Maybe I should listen to him more often 🙂
Like I said, he had been telling me about this other book for a long time. It was something he always talked about. In fact, he went to the author’s event in San Diego in December. I thought — going to the author’s event tells me this is not your ordinary book. This isn’t a book you read and learn a few lessons. Or worse, a book you read and put on the shelf.
This is something different. This almost sounds like a movement, cult-like, if you will.
This is something I need to read NOW!
I decided to just order the book myself, as I am very impatient. I ordered the book right after Christmas.
The sub-title of the book sounds like hypey copy, I know, but it is the absolute truth, if you apply the philosophy he teaches. I promise you that.
It has, without a doubt, changed my life.
My Morning Routine
Since finishing the book, I was committed to putting this into action. It was January, so naturally everyone is ready for change this time of year.
I now have a new morning routine that involves reading, visualizing, praying, exercise, writing & reading affirmations (I touched on that here).
This is all done BEFORE 7 am, as my day now begins at 5:30 am.
Yes, even on weekends.
I used to wake up at 7! So this was a pretty big adjustment for me. The author recommends getting up an hour earlier than you normally do. Now, I am completing this morning routine BEFORE the time I used to get out of bed.
Today was day #21, so it’s supposedly a habit now.
Research shows that it takes 21 days to form a habit. I know some say it’s a myth — I don’t know.
It certainly feels like it’s a habit for me now. Honestly, it has not been nearly as bad as I thought. Although, I was ready for change. I was committed to changing my life. I think that certainly has helped me. You have to want it badly enough.
Now, taking a walk at 6:15 when it is 34 degrees is not easy, but it does help wake me up. Yes, it does get that cold here in Vegas.
I pop in my headphones and listen to two YouTube videos (I download the audio from the videos and then put them on my phone).
The two videos I listen to are the ones below;
I watch a TON of motivational videos on YouTube, I have not found any better than those two. Not saying they are the best, but they are my favorites. If you have some you recommend, please share in the comments. I am always on the lookout for new motivational videos to watch/listen to.
To say this routine/book has changed my life would be an understatement.
I am going to write a much more detailed post about it when I hit day #30.
My advice: Buy the book, read it and put it into action. It will change your life.
Hal, the author, has also created a Facebook community of 10,000+ passionate, generous and inspiring people who report their progress and their struggles. It is a group filled with fantastic people from all walks of life, and every corner of the World. It’s been a lot of fun interacting with people there.
One guy just completed his 1,000th consecutive day practicing the Miracle Morning.
I have a spreadsheet where I keep track of my progress, as recommended by Hal. I have 6 daily habits I do for my Miracle Mornings. I also have 5 additional daily habits that I keep track of as well, so 11 daily habits in total.
Since today is not over yet, I’ll share my first 20 days.
20 days x 11 daily habits = 220 daily habits.
I have completed 212 of these habits, or 96%! I am damn proud of that. These are all habits I did not have in December, so they are all new. Although, I was reading in December, just not consistently.
You cannot improve what you do not measure, hence the reason I keep track. I am also a spreadsheet nerd. It is very similar to the Don’t Break the Chain website from above.
I have read 7 books (#8 will be done this week) since November.
I have not had a cigarette in 16 days.
I haven’t eaten fast food in 20 days.
I have visualized what I really want for 21 consecutive days.
Knowing what you really want in life is so important, but I’d venture to say if you asked most people what they want, they wouldn’t have any idea. I never really did until recently. You can read about how I do it at the link below;
The energy, focus and clarity I have is absolutely amazing. I am a much happier person. I am a much more focused person.
I have a drive inside of me the last 3 weeks where I want to;
That is my motto for 2015. Be my best self! Continue adding value to people’s lives each and every day.
I have drank the Miracle Morning kool-aid and it’s good.
It’s damn good!
